FJB Alumni Update: Eight Alumni Claim National Championship With FGCU Eagles

ESTERO, FL- As the 2018 ACHA Men's Division 2 National Championships has come to an end, the Florida Gulf Coast University hockey program is returning as National Champions. The D2 Eagles defeated Lindenwood University 5-1 to claim the championship for the third time in the programs history.

The 2017-18 roster included eight former Jr. Blades players including Josh Koerner, David Wong, Trevor Mullaly, Brett Yochum, Matt Salera, Jake Leonard, Michael Haskins and Jake Carter.

“It's really exciting to see all these guys win the National Championship together and a big congrats to them! We're extremely proud of them in all they've been able to accomplish,” said head coach Todd Pococke. “They've all had a major impact on the season so it's great they earned this win!”

Forward Koerner was selected as the Most Valuable Player where he posted 30 goals and 28 assists in his 31 regular season contests.  Koerner was a member of the Jr. Blades inaugural season where he spent three years, including one year leading the program as captain.

Wong has just completed his second season with FGCU where he notched 46 regular season points including 22 goals and 24 assists. The Jr. Blade alumni played 100 career games with the organization tallying 60 goals and 71 points.

Mullaly joined the Jr. Blades for two consecutive seasons from 2012-14, where he played 79 games posting 19 goals and 32 assists. The Naples, Florida native has played four years with the Eagles, starting with the D3 program for the 2014-15 season where he was able to advance to D2 the following years.

Yochum signed with the Jr. Blades for the 2013-14 season, where he played three seasons posting before joining the Eagles in 2016. Yochum played 89 games under the Jr. Blades banner where he posted 34 goals and 43 assists.

Defenseman Salera signed with the program for two seasons, before joining the Eagles in 2016. The Fort Myers native has posted three goals and 18 assists for the Eagles during the regular season according to

In his fourth season with FGCU, Leonard posted six goals and 19 assists in his 31 regular season contests. The 22-year-old defenseman joined the Jr. Blades in 2011 where he went on to play three seasons seeing playoff berths each year.

Haskins, 6'0, 205-pounds, made his debut with the Jr. Blades in 2012 where he went on to play two seasons before signing with FGCU. In his second year with the Eagles, Haskins has notched three goals and eight assists during his 30 games played.

Goaltender Jake Carter signed with the Jr. Blades in 2012 where he stood between the pipes for 74 career games that included a 2013-14 USPHL Empire Championship. In his first season with FGCU, Carter posted a .907 save-percentage at the end of the regular season.
